Ball State University Field Station and Environmental Education Center will host two workshops in Basic Wildland Firefighting and Prescribed Fire for Managers. Instructors are National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) certified and include professional wildland firefighters and Indiana DNR Forestry Division staff. Register for both workshops for a 15% discount. Ball State students may enroll for 3 credit hours.

Wildland Firefighter Basic Training is the prerequisite for the DNR Prescribed Fire for Managers training.

The NWCG Wildland Firefighter training combines computer-based self-study (~3 days) and field exercises (one day) to gain fundamental understanding of fire behavior, fire-line safety, Incident Command System and Communications.  The Work Capacity Test (“pack test”) will be offered on site in the afternoon for participants to receive nationally recognized “Red-Card” certification, required to work on wildland fires and many prescribed fires.

The IDNR RX100 Prescribed Fire workshop (2 days) supplements wildland firefighter training to prepare participants to develop, assess, request permits and implement prescribed fire plans on the landscape.  Weather permitting, participants will conduct a prescribed fire on site.
